Thermal Shock they call it! Not a great thing to go through as a home owner, but as roofs goes through many seasons of warm weather and cold weather, expanding and contracting, the roof can crack in places it normally wouldn't.
Expansion and contraction that happens in temperature swings do take a toll on your roof. Joints can crack, seams can tear, and roofing materials can break down and deteriorate.
Older roofs can be thought of as brittle rubber bands, and that doesn't feel too comfortable as a home owner.
